Tony Gould’s book ‘A Summer Plague’ was an invaluable source of information when I was starting this project and learning about polio. He was one of the few historians who recognised that the outbreaks in 1938 were worthy of comment.
On March 2nd this year, I sent an email to Tony, telling him about my book. Then, on the 17th, I spotted an obituary for him in The Guardian, written by his sister. What disappointing news: I would have loved to have received his comments
